Losing Democracy with democracy
I was thinking … is it possible to lose democracy using the democracy principle? It most certainly came close using this principle, in the small country of Romania.
If you don’t know, currently in Romania election proposals are placed for the elections which will take place in Mai this year. The reason why the elections take place in Mai, is that the first round were invalidated. There were “external factors“ which through social media, patriotic comments and other methods, have tried influencing the result of the elections in favor of the unknown candidate Calin Georgescu. The interesting part is that, up to this point, he was an unknown for the common people, but also for the media. When he emerged from the first election tour as direct contended to the president position, even the consecrated media channels, did not know who he was.
I had a feeling of Deja Vu when finding this, as just a few years before, the unknown up to that point party, AUR took 10 % and appeared suddenly in the Romanian political scene pushing a similar agenda. Then and also now, the question was how is in possible for a virtual nobody (person or party) to appear and get so many votes. As we all know, it is virtually impossible to succeed at this without the help from “external factors“. Now let’s analyze this character, Calin Georgescu who since yesterday can no longer apply for the position of President of Romania, final decision of the CCR [Constitutional Court of Romania].
If I would characterize his behavior, even though I am not a doctor, there are big signs that he possibly suffering from a mental illness. There are countless videos posted by him, in which he either contradicts himself or starts questioning the fabric of reality. One example was when he stated that in the water we drink there is information [nanochips :) ]; another is when he characterized one of the most important writers of Romania, Mihai Eminescu, as evil, while regurgitating in another interview that the romanian people are more important than the romans. Yes, those romans which had an entire empire 2000 years before; that he does not believe in Jesus, then stating the religion is one of the most important things in Romania. I could go on and on with examples but if you want to find out more, you can find his “Perles of information”, just by google it. Some Links to quotes and videos, here and here
The most interesting for me was his stance on seeing Brussels as the bad actor which oppresses the Romanian people, while praising Russia. The plan was to win the elections last year, and destroy the democracy in the country, dissolving the parties, instating a new rule and pretty much returning the country to the dark ages, that the romanian people still remember very well, under the wing of Russia. When that plan did not succeed there was a plan B which should has been kicked off this year. An coup d'état using the Romanian people which believed all the lies, spreading and inciting to violence with the message “We take our country back“. (back from who exactly??? is the big question, as the democracy, even though with it’s big problems in Romania, it is still a alive and well)
That brings me to how we almost lost democracy. Romanians were on the verge of instating fascist president, which took democracy in it’s mouth while telling people to get together and bring down the existing democracy. The message was that in Romania, and also entire Europe there is tyrant regime which needs to be either brought down or separate from it. That the Romanias need to be free from everyone and go back to it’s roots. That the positives steps taken from the country since a member of the EU should be replaced with the “true democracy” under his leadership. Every patriotic speech from Calin Georgescu was filled with lies, misinformation and fascist remarks. He even addressed the people using an exact passage taken from the speech of the leader of the legionary movement Gen. Antonescu, executed for his war crimes. Not to mention also the fascist salute done just a few weeks ago. [maybe he was also too overly enthusiastic as Elon Musk :) ]. How can such a character should be let run in the presidential race? One might argue that everyone should be allowed, as we live in democratic state. It is a good argument, but it raises the question how much democracy can suffer as a direct result of it’s own flexibility. Should one, which openly wants to dismantle the state be let to do so on the premise that is democratic? I honestly hope that we are more smart than that. The Romanian people are more smart than that, and the institutions are still functioning as they should.
Now that Russia Plan A: Calin Georgescu as president, and Plan B: coup d'état have failed, my hope is that we will remain watchful for a possible Plan C , D etc. The upcoming elections will be very interesting to watch but I am cautiously positive that the people will see through all lies and vote for someone with democratic values. We should defend the hard gained democracy with all our strength and knowhow. It is scary for everyone, when one of the most mediatized person in the “free world”, Elon Musk, supports such characters openly. When you see that some known tennis man [Daniil Medvedev] takes a positive stance to these people who want to destabilize a country. The fact that he even knows the name Calin Georgescu, name that the Romanian people did not know even a few months before, should raise some eyebrows.
What we mustn’t forget is the fact that even though these persons are trying to send the message that they represent the majority, it is a false message. The majority of Romanians are pro Europe and pro NATO. That being member of the Schengen is as great as it sounds. That the fight was long in getting in line with European values but walking this path is worth it, as we all benefit from it.
Look through these fabricated lies, check your news for disinformation and stop the cult of persons who know it all. If there is something to be learned from history is that the cult of a person is dangerous and in troubling times, we should all come together defending the values which we hold most dear: Freedom, Peace and Prosperity.
Until next time, TFG
