The choice should be so simple…

I was thinking … in the election of a new president in Romania, why there is even a debate? At least why it should be debated with both participants, as until now, one presents himself in each show and answers the questions of the people while the other is flying to other countries shouting that he supports pro Russian parties …

For those of you who don’t know, in Romania the second round of elections will take place this weekend in order to chose the new president of the country. The two candidates are as opposed in profile as you could get. One is an mathematician with proven record in academic pursuit and also administration (former mayor of Bucharest) and the other an extremist who has no track record of managing anything until now, except of being the gallery leader for a football team. One good with numbers, one good at throwing words and inciting people. One present in all debate invitations launched from the media. The other present in the first one and since then … throwing lies on social media and flying to other countries to show support to other extremist parties (Poland, Italy and so on). Let that sink in; in the week before elections one stays in from of the many questions the people have and answers, looking with the information at hand the best solution, and the other disappears to other countries, launching lies via social media.

It is simply insulting to the romanian people the way they are being treated by the extremist candidate, George Simion. Such behavior denotes a complete lack of respect of one who could lead Romania in the future, to his own people. Regardless of the choice to be express on Sunday, each should sit and reflect, the direction he wants to support. One pro European, who has in focus the revitalization of Romania economy and who openly declared that he wants to be a president for all Romanians. One pro Russia candidate, who declared sanctions on a group and individual personal level after he will be elected. That alone, for me, should be reason enough to exclude him from all further discussions as it incites to division and fear. His focus is not to be president for all Romanians but for the people who elected him. To centralize all power in his hands and trample 35 years of democracy.

Until now you have noticed why the choice should be so simple … but yet it isn’t. Romanians are so sick and tired that are willing to believe the promises made by George Simion of bringing the country to the “Golden Age“. I am baffled by the fact that so many have forgotten or maybe did not do the research what the Golden Age meant for Romania. An oppressive regime, which made people live in fear and was so “well“ managed that you were allowed to eat in rations. Even gas was restricted and the queues in tanking your car were km long. Getting a service was done successfully with a pack of coffee or of cigarettes and bribery was the only way getting what you needed. Are the Romanian folk, not sick of such practices? Do they want to go back to that permanent state of fear or they want institutions that work for them, the people who pay taxes? This will be the choice on Sunday …

For all Romanians who work in other countries the choice should as well be simple, as I thought. Having a view how systems (medicine, educations and so on) work in harmony for the people, should have been fuel enough to vote pro Europe. Of course, in the case of citizens who moved to other countries, preserving the “hustle“ mentality, it was shocking to find out how the systems in place do not support it. They were suddenly no longer able to “get a guy that gets a guy” or push 50 Euro to avoid the line. They were foreign citizens, maybe with language limitations, who needed to struggle each day in getting things done. And Romanian people are resourceful, they managed to do it, but remained with the bad taste in their mouth on how the system here treats them as foreigners. They liked the financial remuneration but aquired a rage within, for the “West“. The first candidate who came and praise Romania and threw lies about how Romania will come back to it’s roots (started with Calin Georgescu and continued by George Simion) was automatically seen as a savior. Both offered no solutions to Romania problems but started a populist speech, praising how we would be better isolating ourselves. Together with religious chants, they praise an Era long gone; gone through the blood and tears of our parents who 35 years fought in the revolution to change exactly the thing who these charlatans are applauding.

So the choice should be simple … but it isn’t. I encourage anyone, regardless of their choice to go on Sunday, to go to vote. Why regardless? Because it is a choice for all Romanians, for all people who have to live the next years with the result and because no one should feel intimidated in expressing his view. All Romanians are important and this is the reason why the vote should be pro Europa, for freedom of speech, for a united Romania after elections, for us All.

Until next time, TFG
